Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the famous Selous Game Reserve, is the largest national park in Africa and one of Tanzania’s most spectacular wilderness areas. Covering over 30,000 square kilometers, it offers visitors an unrivaled safari experience with vast landscapes of savannahs, woodlands, lakes, and the mighty Rufiji River, which is the park’s lifeline.

The Rufiji River and its network of channels, lakes, and swamps create an exceptional habitat for wildlife and provide opportunities for unique boat safaris. This is one of the best places in East Africa to see hippos and crocodiles up close, along with a wide range of water birds.

Nyerere is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, and the endangered African wild dogs. The park also boasts more than 440 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

Unlike the more crowded northern parks of Tanzania, Nyerere offers a quieter and more authentic safari experience. Visitors can enjoy a combination of classic game drives, walking safaris with armed rangers, and boat safaris—activities that make the park unique among Tanzanian destinations.

Named in honor of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, Tanzania’s founding father, the park is a symbol of the country’s dedication to conservation and sustainable tourism. With its size, biodiversity, and variety of activities, Nyerere National Park is truly a hidden gem for safari lovers seeking adventure in an unspoiled wilderness.
